WHAT WE CAN OFFER
Helping to sustain our natural environment for the Waitakere ranges, and waterways. Wetlands are one of nature’s quiet superheroes. They help keep our water clean, reduce flooding, store carbon and provide homes for many plants and animals that thrive in wet environments.
The ranges are home to rare native plants and wildlife, rugged coastlines, spectacular landscapes and many wāhi tapu (sacred sites). Those of us who live here share a responsibility to help protect it.
Natural Sustainability
Two tributaries run through the Garden, taking Spring and surface water to the Woodlands Park Stream.
Our Volunteers,Neighbors, Students and Corrections workers have been clearing a massive tangle of Honeysuckle, Gorse, Privet, Woolly Nightshade and Blackberry from this neglected area over the last two years.
The Waterways and previously planted Native trees are now exposed again.
Riparian planting for water filtration and cooling will also help with stability on the steep slopes, subsequently retaining topsoil on the flatter pasture areas. The Benefits are wide ranging.
Tuna (eels) will also enjoy a cleaner, less obstructed passage up to the pond on Owen's Green.
Harakeke is established at the lower end of this waterway as it enters the bush. The increase in bird life using this corridor is increasing and is now busy with kingfishers and fantails.
We have begun planting some trees and grasses at the upper end. More will occur next winter when the Honeysuckle and Blackberry are fully eradicated.
The progress so far is Phenomenal. and very satisfying..
